If you've propagated plants for any length of time, chances are you've used peat moss. For years, peat has been the industry standard for propagation plugs and seed starting, and for good reason—it works.


I relied on peat-based media for more than seven years. It produced healthy plants, rooted cuttings, and consistent results. But as we continued running propagation trials, I wanted to know if there was a better option.

After comparing the two, we found that coco not only rooted cuttings consistently, but it also offered several advantages that made it a better fit for our propagation program.


Understanding the Difference


Both peat moss and coco coir are excellent propagation media, but they behave very differently.


Peat moss naturally has a low pH and tends to retain water more tightly. That can be an advantage for some crops, but it also means growers need to pay close attention to irrigation practices to avoid keeping the media too wet.


Coco coir, on the other hand, provides excellent water-holding capacity while maintaining more air space around the root zone. One of the biggest advantages is that the grower has much more control over the buffering process.


Instead of accepting whatever nutrient profile comes with the media, coco allows you to tailor the buffering solution to your crop. Whether you want additional calcium, magnesium, or another specific nutrient balance, you have the flexibility to build the root environment your plants need.


What We Learned During Our Trials


After years of using peat, switching to coco wasn't a decision we made overnight.


We wanted to compare rooting performance, moisture management, and overall plant health under the same growing conditions.


As our trials progressed, coco consistently produced strong root development while giving us greater control over irrigation and nutrition. We also appreciated being able to customize the buffering solution rather than relying solely on the media's natural characteristics.


That flexibility has become one of the biggest reasons we've continued using coco in our propagation program.


Common Mistakes Growers Make


Changing media doesn't automatically improve propagation success.


One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating coco exactly like peat.


They don't behave the same.


Overwatering is one of the most common problems, especially for growers making the switch. While coco drains well, constantly keeping it saturated reduces oxygen around developing roots and slows propagation.


Another mistake is overlooking the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the media.


Both peat and coco hold nutrients differently. Understanding how each media interacts with calcium, magnesium, and potassium allows you to build a more stable root environment and avoid nutrient imbalances during propagation.


My Recommendation


If you're currently using peat and getting good results, there's nothing wrong with staying with what works.


However, if you're looking for more control over your propagation program, coco coir is worth considering.


In many cases, coco is competitively priced, can be buffered to meet your specific crop requirements, rewets more easily after drying, and provides an excellent balance of moisture retention and air space for developing roots.


Like every part of growing, success comes from understanding your media—not simply following what everyone else has always used.
